Cream of the Crap

It’s been a while since I showed off any work on the site, which is slightly unusual, since I have generally been very busy. However, as my employer has been keen to let me know, their focus is more on churning out work than taking the extra time for quality. Therefore, as I look back on my catalogue of work over the past 6 months, it’s difficult to find many works that I would proudly show off.

What follows are the ones that made the cut.

Firstly, I present to you the Nutella Mood Film. This was one of those projects that were horrible to work on, but yielded a good result. I should like to add, however, that had I more time and a better brief, I could have made it look much, much better. But first, let’s have a look:

To begin with, coming up with a look and feel for the video was difficult. We were furnished with a bunch of (low-res and low quality) images, plus one or two good shots of Nutella jars, and the rest was up to us. So after much experimentation, I came up with this sketch-book design. The client absolutely flipped for it, but this design also doubled the workload. Still, it’s work that I am proud of.

In this case, however, I did make one editorial change before putting it online: the audio. Originally, the client had chosen 2 songs, but couldn’t decide which should provide the soundtrack. So they told us to use both, and transition from one to the next. This would be fine, except that the first was really old, the sort of thing your great-grandparents no doubt thought was adventurous and exciting, and the second was modern and beat-y and crap-vocal-performance-y. Terrible. So the audio you hear is my own, fresh mix. Not entirely relevant to Nutella, or their message, but it seems to set a nice tone, all the same.

Second is my set visualisation concepts reel:

This isn’t the type of work that I typically go for, but when working at an events company, it makes sense that it should represent a large chunk of my workload. Sometimes, I’m asked for a very simple mockup, with a basic stage setup, video screens, maybe a bit of lighting … fairly ordinary stuff. Other times, however, some extra effort is required. The ones which require effort are usually for pitches, meaning that the prospective client needs to be blown away by what they see, and therefore hand the project (and the ever-important money!) over. This video is of that ilk.

But as you can see, it’s not always the stage. Sometimes, other elements need visualising, such as the various themed pods in the Coca Cola section, or the shipping container art gallery, or pretty much everything for the Port of Felixstowe, come to think of it. (And this isn’t even the pitch video we produced, just a few parts of it.)

Anyway, hope you enjoy this stuff. This is the creamy layer on top of 6 months of … mediocrity.
